The basic obedience course gave dog owners the skills to transform their untrained dog into a well-behaved pet dog. The intermediate classes pick up where we left off in the basic obedience course. It introduces the dog owner to more practical exercises which we can practice with our dogs, to make our dogs more versatile.
Intermediate Level 1
Prerequisite: Dog must be able to perform the exercises stated in the basic obedience course
- Heel on lead with right-about turn, right turn and left turn
- Fast, slow and normal pace heelwork
- Stationary right turn, left turn and single side step
- Automatic sit
- Stand with hand signal
- Down from heel
- Stays - sit and down stay off leash at 5-8 metres for 1 minute
- Stand for examination - handler beside dog
- Recall off lead at 8 metres
- Finish to heel
- Introduce left about turn
- Basic distance control - Sit, Stand, Down in front of dog
- Introduce basic jumps in agility training
The recommended length of the training programme for the intermediate level 1 course is 6 to 8 lessons.
Intermediate Level 2
Prerequisite: Dog must be able to perform the exercises stated in the intermediate level 1 course
- Heel off lead
- Stationary turns, right circle, left circle, walking sideways
- Left about turn
- Out of sight stays - Down 2 minutes, Sit 1 minute
- tand stay 1 minute, 8 metres
- Stand for examination - handler 8 metres away
- Recall - long distance at 20 metres minimum
- Basic retrieve work - holding dumbbell, retrieve on flat surface
- Distance control - Sit, Stand, Down in front of dog at 5 metres
- Introduce more obstacles in agility training
The recommended length of the training programme for the intermediate level 2 course is 8 to 10 lessons.
